Get ready for a creative and stylish career
When you successfully complete the Certificate III in Hairdressing, you will gain the practical skills and knowledge needed to work as a qualified hairdresser in a salon.
Hairdressers are skilled in using a variety of tools and products to create desired hairstyles, including scissors, razors, blow dryers, curling irons, and various hair care products.
They consult with clients to understand their preferences and recommend suitable hairstyles based on factors such as face shape, hair texture, and lifestyle.
Additionally, hairdressers provide hair care advice and recommend products to maintain the health and appearance of clients' hair between appointments.
It is recommended that the Certificate III in Hairdressing be undertaken as an apprenticeship, allowing participants to gain hands-on experience in a salon environment while completing their training. For more information, please see the Apprenticeship section for more information.
For those wishing to upgrade an older qualification or use skills obtained overseas to achieve an Australian qualification, an On-campus pathway is available.
Hairdressing can be a rewarding profession for those who enjoy working with people, love being creative, and have a passion for hair. It offers many opportunities for skill development and specialization.
Essential hairdressing skills you will develop:

• Updos and braiding: Get creative with updos and intricate braids for long hair, perfect for special occasions.

• Using and organizing tools: Become proficient with scissors, heat instruments, and drying equipment to create stunning hairstyles.
• Designing event hairstyles: Craft unique and elegant styles for weddings, proms, and other events.
• Colouring and lightening hair: Apply colour, highlights, and lightening techniques, and learn to neutralize unwanted tones.
• Promoting your business: Gain marketing skills to attract new clients and grow your salon's reputation.
• Industry research: Stay updated with the latest trends and techniques in the hairdressing industry.
• Diagnosing hair and scalp conditions: Understand how to identify and treat various hair and scalp issues.
The workplace of a hairdresser can vary depending on the type of salon, clientele, and location. Salons may range from small, independently owned businesses to large, upmarket chains often found in busy urban areas or shopping centres.
Within the salon, hairdressers usually have their own workstation equipped with essential tools such as styling chairs, mirrors, basins, and a variety of hair care products. The environment is typically lively and social, with music playing in the background and the buzz of conversation between stylists and clients.
Hairdressers often work full-time hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate clients’ schedules. Flexibility is common in the industry, allowing hairdressers to balance work and personal commitments. Some may also choose to work as freelancers—renting a chair in a salon or providing mobile services to clients in their homes or other locations.
