Bold colour, happy accidents, and a little digital magic

Risograph is a unique print process invented in Japan in the 1980s. Part screenprint, part photocopier, part magic — it’s loved by artists and designers for its vibrant inks, quirky textures, and unexpected colour blends. Every print has its own character, making it a favourite for zines, posters, and limited-edition art.

Over five weeks, you’ll get hands-on with the Risograph, experimenting with colour, layering, and composition. You’ll learn how to prepare artwork by hand and digitally, and how to take advantage of the Riso’s quirks to produce professional-looking prints with personality.

Projects include:

  • Creating your own colour test workbook/journal (bound by you in week one)
  • Printing a set of gift cards and posters
  • Designing and self-publishing your own zine
  • Producing art prints that showcase your style
  • Contributing a page to a collaborative student calendar

This isn’t just a digital course — but we’ll explore how digital design tools (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Procreate) can be used to prepare images for Risograph. Don’t worry if you’re new to digital design — we’ll guide you through the basics. If you’re already confident, you’ll learn how to push your digital skills into a bold new medium.

Plus, you’ll leave with a solid understanding of Risograph’s potential — and a stack of work to add to your portfolio or share with friends.

Places are strictly limited. The course fee includes all materials, including paper, ink, and access to NMTAFE’s RISO studio and colour drum library. A complete OHS induction will also be provided before you begin working in the space.

  • Setting up files for RISO printing
  • Separating colours and layers
  • Working with spot colours, textures, and overlays
  • Creating posters, cards, and zines
  • Operating the Risograph safely
  • Confidence to produce your own RISO projects

I have the following attributes:

  • Curious and creative
  • Attention to detail when preparing files and colours
  • Interested in design, printmaking, or making zines
  • Keen to learn in a hands-on, small group setting
