Explore the ancient and dynamic art of Raku firing

Are you looking to expand your ceramic skills with a unique and engaging firing technique? Would you like to create distinctive ceramic pieces featuring metallic lustres, crackled glazes, and dramatic surface effects?

This course introduces you to the dynamic world of Raku ceramics - a traditional Japanese firing method known for its spontaneity and striking results. Delivered at our centrally located Perth Campus, this hands-on programme covers how to prepare clay bodies for Raku, apply specialised glazes, and manage the fast-paced post-firing reduction process.

Unlike traditional ceramics courses, this program focuses on fast-firing experimentation, enabling you to produce multiple pieces in a single session while developing confidence in the spontaneous and unpredictable nature of Raku.

Ideal for ceramic artists, art educators, studio technicians, and passionate hobbyists, this course offers a practical and inspiring experience that will elevate your creative practice and technical knowledge. You’ll finish with a series of unique ceramic works and a solid foundation in Raku techniques.

  • Select and prepare clay bodies suitable for Raku and thermal shock
  • Apply Raku-specific glazes, including copper matte, crackle, and metallic finishes
  • Load kilns and apply fast-firing techniques unique to Raku
  • Operate a Raku kiln safely, following best-practice safety protocols
  • Perform post-firing reduction processes to achieve distinctive surface effects
  • Handle hot materials and manage smoke safely during the reduction process
  • Troubleshoot common issues in Raku firing
  • Incorporate Raku techniques into broader ceramic work

I have the following attributes:

  • Creative and curious, eager to experiment
  • Adaptable and open to unpredictable results
  • Detail-oriented and patient
  • Comfortable with hands-on, physical work
  • Interested in ceramics or visual arts
