The workplace of a glazier is dynamic and varied, depending on the nature of the projects they are involved in. Glaziers can be found working on construction sites, where they collaborate with architects, contractors, and other tradespeople. Construction sites offer a fast-paced and ever-changing environment, requiring glaziers to adapt to different tasks and timelines. They may work both indoors and outdoors, depending on the stage of construction and the specific glass installations they are responsible for.
Some of the skills learned will include:
- determining type and dimensions of glass required
- laying glass over patterns on padded tables and in jigs
- measuring and marking glass for cutting
- examining glass and marking defective areas
- cutting along patterns and templates
- breaking off sheets and excess glass with notched tools and glass pliers
- installing glass and mirrors in windows, skylights, display cases, interior walls and ceilings
- smoothing rough edges using belt sanders and smoothing wheels
- may coat, cut, etch, trim and treat glass to achieve special effects.
- reading and adhering to construction plans and Australian Standards
If you enjoy being creative and working with your hands, a career as a glazier might be perfect for you! Here are some of the most common traits that successful glaziers have:
- Physical Endurance - Glaziers need to have a high level of stamina. The job can be physically demanding, requiring you to stand, kneel, and sit for long periods. You’ll also need to hold heavy pieces of glass until they are fully installed.
- Stability - Working on ladders and scaffolds is a regular part of the job. Good balance is essential to avoid falls and injuries.
- Precision: Many glass pieces must be cut by hand, so great hand-eye coordination is crucial.
- Understanding - You’ll need to read and understand materials like regulations and contracts to ensure everything is done correctly.
- Problem-Solving - Each project is unique, and you’ll need to figure out the best plan of action for each client.
- Interpersonal Skills - Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are important since you’ll interact with a wide range of clients.
- Reliability - Given the urgent nature of some issues, being dependable is key. Clients need to trust that you’ll get the job done right and on time.
Glaziers work in various locations, from residential buildings to office complexes, retail spaces, hospitals, and schools. This diversity exposes you to different architectural styles and design elements, keeping the job interesting and allowing you to continually expand your expertise.
If these traits sound like you and you want a diverse workplace, a career as a glazier could be a great fit!
