This skill set gives you the practical skills and knowledge to follow standard procedures for extracting precious metals from their host materials, ready for analysis.
As a fire pourer, you’ll learn to handle routine samples, identify common issues with sample preparation and cupellation, and make standard adjustments to fluxes and firings.
At North Metropolitan TAFE, you’ll train in a purpose-built fire assaying facility with a fully equipped laboratory for analysis.
- Sample preparation and weighing
- Fusion, cupellation and metal separation
- Safe furnace operation and handling materials

- Basic numeracy and literacy skills
- Ability to follow safety procedures
- Physical capability to work in a lab or high-temperature environment
- Willingness to handle chemicals and hot materials
- Some chemistry knowledge
