This introductory skill set will help you to tackle the skills needed to be an interpreter
This skill set is designed for people who have work experience as an interpreter and wish to meet the eligibility criteria for the NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters) Certified Provisional Interpreter test or the NAATI Recognised Practising credential.
Skill set covers:
• understanding ethical standards in interpreting
• preparing for interpreting assignments
• communication techniques
• building glossaries
Taught in a mixed-language cohort, this skill set fulfills the training and ethical competency prerequisites only.
To satisfy the intercultural competency and language proficiency prerequisites, you can apply to NAATI and you will receive further instructions regarding the provision of additional evidence of language proficiency or the necessity to undergo an Intercultural Competency screening test.
We recommend you have one of the following:
- A tertiary qualification (degree level or higher) where the language of instruction was English.
- IELTS (Academic) with a minimum band score of 6 in listening and speaking. Or equivalent results in another English proficiency test. For more information, visit NAATI’s English Proficiency requirements.
If you do not have any of the above, NMTAFE can arrange for you to complete the Versant English Placement Test for free (maximum one test sitting per applicant per intake). To access this online test, please submit your application, and NMTAFE will contact you to arrange the test.
