If you already have a business or are looking to work in a small business, the Operate a Small Business Skill Set is perfect for enhancing your skills and knowledge.

This skill set is designed to help you thrive in a small business environment by equipping you with practical and relevant skills and knowledge. Whether you're looking to improve your current business operations or aiming to excel in a small business role, these competencies will support your goals.

To help us help you achieve your goals, we'll ask you to provide us with some details about your motivation for doing the course, your work experience and your computer literacy.

Please note this skill set is experiencing high demand and places may be limited, applications to study this course in semester 2 are expected to open in late May. 

  • Design and produce business documents: Learn to create professional documents that meet business standards. It involves selecting and using a range of functions on different computer applications. It's intended for individuals with basic computer skills who can apply their theoretical knowledge of document design and production effectively to produce their documents.
  • Develop web presence using social media: Use social media tools and applications to enhance your business's online presence. You will set up and develop a social media page for our simulated business and then develop and review posts to improve their web presence.
  • Design and produce spreadsheets: Gain proficiency in using spreadsheets to efficiently and accurately create budgets, perform calculations, track progress, make forecasts, present data graphically and much more.
  • Plan finance for new business ventures: Using our simulated business, you will learn the financial necessities of establishing a small start-up. We will cover the financial requirements of a business, including profit targets, cash flow projections and strategies to garner financial support.
  • Apply knowledge of WHS laws in the workplace: You will understand and apply work health and safety (WHS) legislation in your workplace. This unit is ideal for those who want to ensure their workplace complies with WHS laws and contribute to a safer work environment.
