What is a Credit Transfer?
A Credit Transfer recognises formal education you have previously completed.
Credit transfer is given for any accredited unit that is an exact match. Credit can also be granted if a unit you have completed is officially recongised as “equivalent” and directly comes before the unit you are applying for. However, this does not include units that have been replaced two or more times.
You can only apply for a credit transfer after you have been accepted into a course at North Metropolitan TAFE (NMTAFE). This is explained in Step 1 below.
There is no charge for processing a Credit Transfer application. Client Services will advise if any refunds are applicable. Any reduction in enrolled study hours may affect Centrelink and other study allowances.
To support your application, you must provide official records of your previous study. You will also need to grant NMTAFE access to your academic records by logging into the USI Student Portal and following the Setup access for NMTAFE to view your USI transcript instructions.

Credit Transfer Process
In order to apply for a credit transfer students must have been accepted into a course at NMTAFE.
Information for how to apply for courses can be found on our Apply and enrol page.
You can only submit a credit transfer application after you have received and accepted a course offer.
If you have not yet received an offer, please wait before submitting the below form.
The credit transfer application form is located at the bottom of this page. Before you begin, make sure you have the required information ready.
You will need to:
- Grant NMTAFE access to your academic records via the USI Student Portal and following the Setup access for NMTAFE to view your USI transcript instructions.
- Upload one, or both, of the following:
- A secure PDF of your USI record from the USI Student Portal; or
- An official academic transcript issued by your previous training organisation listing units completed.
-
Provide consent for NMTAFE to verify your records with your previous training organisation.
Your previous study must be verified by the issuing Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
Some RTOs require signed consent before they can verify your documents. If this is needed the Qualifications and Credentials team will contact you.
For studies completed after 2015, verification can usually be done via your USI transcript. This is typically the fastest option, ensure you have either:
- Granted NMTAFE access to your USI, or
- Uploaded your USI transcript
If your study is very recent, it may not yet appear on your USI record. In this case, please provide an official transcript from the RTO.
Once your previous study is verified, and if your units are confirmed as equivalent, your credit will be applied to your Study Plan.
If you have received a quote for your course but have not yet made payment, you can contact your Client Services team to request an updated quote.
Important: Course places cannot be held while waiting for a credit transfer outcome. We recommend paying your fees as soon as possible to secure your place.
If you are already enrolled in a unit that is later credited Client Services will be notified and will advise if a refund applies. Your timetable will also be updated to remove the credited unit.
Please note that some classes cover multiple units. Continue attending all scheduled classes unless advised otherwise by Client Services.
