The Certificate II Visual Art is a Level 2 Qualification under the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF).
Entry to the Certificate II in Visual Art is very competitive.
Please note this course has required language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills and applicants will need to complete a short assessment to ascertain their current LLN levels. Once accepted into the program you will be invited to a pre-enrolment briefing and will be required to undertake a short LLN assessment.
On completion of this qualification, you will be eligible to continue to a Certificate III Visual Art. The course covers a mainly practical component and requires students to use machinery and equipment as specified in the training package. Subsequently applicants need to consider their ability to perform the core skills and their suitability for the course.
In order to make an informed choice about the suitability of a course, you must take into account the essential skills and knowledge in addition to the critical aspects of assessment of a course or qualification.
Observational skills – this includes the ability to:
- identify safety hazards and risks
Communication skills – this includes the ability to:
- communicate effectively with a range of people and lecturers
- use appropriate language and respect at all times
- listen attentively to what is being said
- read and understand written information at Certificate II level
- use technology to communicate (e.g. computers or tablets)
- communicate and work with other people as a team
Technical and / or motor skills – this includes the ability to:
- deal with physical demands of manual tasks and use of appropriate tools
- grasp, push, turn and manipulate objects
- use equipment and other technology (e.g. computers, art equipment and technology)
Cognitive / intellectual skills – this includes the ability to:
- gather, understand, organise, recall and communicate information at a Certificate II level
- use judgment / basic problem solving skills (e.g. to respond to immediate safety risks)
- understand other people’s perspectives / opinions and respect their choices
- understand and use maths effectively (e.g. measurements)
- maintain a sufficient level of concentration to complete an activity / task
- perform tasks in a safe manner and within reasonable timeframes
Behavioral and social skills – this includes the ability to:
- demonstrate patience and willingness to work with a variety of people
- demonstrate professional behavior (e.g. punctuality and respect personal boundaries)
- control your emotions and reactions and withhold personal opinions
- tolerate close proximity with individuals
- interact with all genders
- adapt to change
- take responsibility for own actions
Language, Literacy & Numeracy
The Language, Literacy & Numeracy requirements are core skills at a certificate II level. The Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) indicates that the five core skill areas are reading, writing, numeracy, oral communication and learning which we apply in our personal and community; workplace and employment; and education and training.
Some of the core language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills for entry into this Industry are:
- Learning – legal guidelines of work, individual differences, service standards, safety policies and procedures
- Reading Skills - reading and understanding procedures , safety signs
- Writing Skills - completing forms and art skills
- Oral Communication –active listening skills, communicating with classmates and college staff.
- Numeracy Skills – read weights and measurements,
- Problem Solving Skills – identify and respond to class instructions
- Technology Skills – use of computers or tablets and respond to emails

Students are required to have access to a computer and internet (NMTAFE students can access computers via its libraries – available at all campuses).
All students must understand their workplace health and safety obligations and safety requirements under the act.
All students must be able to participate in Risk Assessments, know who to report a risk to and Hazard Identification.
All workers must meet the qualification and/or legislative requirements set by industry standards. To work in the industry as an as an artist a basic understanding of health and safety is required.
