NAIDOC Week 2026

Estimated reading time: 1 minute

Staff, students and members of the community came together at North Metropolitan TAFE's Midland Campus in June to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2026: 50 Years Deadly, recognising and honouring the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The day began with a community breakfast, bringing guests together before a meaningful Smoking Ceremony by Clive Smith and Welcome to Country led by Trevor Martin and Noongar Elder James Webb. Attendees were given an opportunity to learn more about the significance of these important cultural traditions and their role in fostering respect, connection and understanding.

Following the ceremony, guests gathered indoors for a captivating performance by the Wadumbah Aboriginal Dance Group. Featuring traditional body paint, storytelling through dance and powerful didgeridoo playing by James Webb, the performance showcased the richness of Aboriginal culture and left a lasting impression on the audience.

The celebrations continued with a variety of activities and special guest appearances. Guests enjoyed interviews with Boom Radio, while Jarred Wall (BOOX KID), DJ Macca and social media influencer Nyima Tucker helped create a vibrant and engaging atmosphere throughout the day.

A special thank you goes to NMTAFE's lecturers and Diploma of Event Management students for their dedication and hard work in planning and delivering the event. Thanks also to our Photography students, who expertly captured the day's memorable moments.
