How On campus

Lead cyber defence. Run security operations. Become a paraprofessional in WA's premier program.

Build paraprofessional-level skills in risk assessment, identity management, digital forensics, cloud security and penetration testing — and graduate ready to help defend organisations across commercial and government sectors. This is North Metropolitan TAFE’s flagship cyber security qualification. We were the first TAFE in Western Australia to open a dedicated Cyber Security Training Centre, helping to skill the next generation of cyber security professionals for one of Australia’s fastest-growing industries.

You will develop the technical and theoretical expertise to perform risk assessments, manage identity and access, conduct penetration testing, undertake digital forensics, secure cloud environments, and respond to cyber threats in real-world settings.

Graduates work as cyber security paraprofessionals across commercial enterprises, government agencies, and as independent consultants.

What you will build

  • Real-world security risk assessments and penetration testing experience
  • Identity management, critical infrastructure protection and threat evaluation skills
  • Virtualised cyber security infrastructure design and implementation
  • Digital forensic investigation skills for workstations and mobile devices
  • IoT vulnerability identification and advanced computing knowledge
  • A working understanding of IP, ethics and privacy in ICT environments

  • identity management
  • cyber security awareness
  • critical infrastructure protection
  • virtualised cyber security infrastructure design
  • threat evaluation
  • identify IoT vulnerabilities
  • risk Assessment and Penetration Testing

  • Able to cope with physical and psychological demands of this type of work
  • Basic Understanding of ICT: Students should have a foundational knowledge of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), including basic programming, network structure, databases, and hardware components.
  • Interest in Cybersecurity: Since the course is heavily oriented towards cybersecurity, students should have a genuine interest in this area. They should be curious about understanding different types of cyber threats, how they work, and how they can be prevented.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: The ability to solve problems and think critically is crucial for this course. Many units involve identifying threats, assessing vulnerabilities, and finding appropriate solutions.
  • Ethical Mindset: Given the course's focus on ethics and privacy in ICT environments, students should have a good sense of ethics and understand the importance of maintaining privacy and security in digital environments.
  • Teamwork and Communication Skills: As the course involves managing team effectiveness and interacting with clients on a business level, good interpersonal skills, such as effective communication, collaboration, and leadership, are important.
  • Analytical Skills: The ability to analyze complex systems and situations is important, especially for tasks like risk assessments, penetration testing, and business analysis activities.
  • Self-Motivated and Proactive Learner: Cybersecurity is a fast-evolving field. Therefore, students need to be self-motivated and proactive in keeping up with the latest trends and developments.
  • Attention to Detail: Cybersecurity often involves spotting small anomalies that could indicate larger issues. Thus, attention to detail is a valuable attribute for students entering this course.
  • Resilience and Persistence: Cybersecurity can often be a challenging field, with new issues arising regularly. Resilience and persistence will help students to deal with these challenges effectively.
