You'll learn to safely take venous blood and other samples, about how the body works, how to prevent the spread of infection as well as medical terms which you will be able use in any further health related studies you may choose to undertake.

This course is low fee* for residents of Western Australia and temporary residents holding certain visa types. An annual fee cap of $400 for those aged 15-24 or concession holders or $1,200 for everyone else, applies to this course. Some eligibility conditions apply for the low fee training and other fees may apply for some courses. Please refer to the FAQs(opens in a new tab) for more information.

Have you ever had a blood test? Did you know the person trained to do this is called a phlebotomist?
Did you find the experience interesting? Did you check out all the equipment and special containers in the room on your visit? Do you enjoy talking to people and helping them feel at ease during what can be a stressful time? 

If you answered yes to these questions, this Certificate III in Pathology Collection course could start you on a rewarding career path.

As a phlebotomist (pathology collector) you'll interact with a wide variety of people while performing specimen collection, a vital part on their way to a better health status.

You'll provide this assistance by

  • providing excellent customer service and communication
  • taking venous blood samples with different types of needles
  • collecting specimens such as swabs, urine and stool samples
  • interacting with patients, couriers, lab staff and doctors
  • working within collection centres, hospitals or doing home visits

The knowledge and practical skills you gain will equip you to work as a pathology collector/phlebotomist in a variety of settings.

You will gain transferable skills which you will be able use in other health related studies you may choose to undertake, such as laboratory techniques, nursing, pharmacy or anaesthetic technology & practice.

  • Safely take venous blood and other samples from patients
  • Recognise healthy body systems
  • How to prevent the spread of infection
  • Understand and apply medical terminology appropriately
  • Work legally and ethically

Prior to enrolment into this qualification, please consider if you are:

  • Over 18 years of age
  • Able to set aside between 5-6 hours per week for study, attend classes a minimum of three days a week and complete a one week work placement
  • Are prepared to work in hospital wards, outpatient clinics, off-site collection rooms and home collection services
  • Able to stand on your feet for long periods of time
  • Able to travel to multiple collection centres for work placement; and
  • If you have the following attributes:

    • Strong sense of professional boundaries and integrity
    • Cultural awareness

    • Able to work co-operatively within a multidisciplinary team
    • Good administration and organisational skills
    • Computer literacy and accurate recording of details
    • Able to problem solve and seek assistance when necessary
