When you complete the Diploma of Information Technology Networking you will have all the skills needed to be successful in this in-demand industry. You'll extend the knowledge and skills learnt in the ICT40120 Certificate IV in Information Technology (Networking) by managing complex networks, configuring virtual computing environments, applying advanced switching skills, implementing active directories, administering Microsoft 365 systems, Linux operating system and VMware, managing data storage systems and building complex networks.
All current industry standards are covered and you'll gain real-world experience conducting help-desk support as part of your studies on our dedicated training network. This course also embeds studies in Cisco, Microsoft Server and VMware.
You'll be able to utilise project management techniques and develop advanced soft skills such as communication with clients through team work to produce the end product aligned with business needs. Independent thinking and problem solving skills developed within your Certificate IV course are further enhanced with real life client projects.
Our graduates are confident, job ready and sought after by industry because of the specific skills they have gained at North Metropolitan TAFE. Many have employment by the time they graduate.
New students who have not completed either a Certificate IV in Information Technology (Networking) or Certificate IV in Cyber Security, or equivalent, should contact the area to ensure they apply for the correct level of study.
- Advanced problem solving and research skills
- Project Management, team work and advanced client skills
- Network testing
- Debugging systems
I have the following attributes:
- Sound underpinning knowledge of Linux essentials, VMware, IP addressing, Subnetting, router and switch configuration and Python, basic cyber security
- Good communication skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Aptitude for design
- Interested in developing knowledge of computer programming languages
- Happy to keep up to date with new web technologies and trends
I have attended the end of year graduations of students from North Metropolitan TAFE for the Cert IV in Programming, Cert IV in Web Based Technologies, Diploma of Software Development and Diploma of Website Development. As part of the experience, I see their end of year projects demonstrated and have the opportunity to question them on what they have built and the extent of their knowledge. Those students are Industry ready. I have attended for at least the past four years, probably longer, and continue to be impressed with what I see. The courses get stronger each year, and the students graduating have a lot to offer.
Michelle Sandford, Chairman of the Australian Computer Society in WA, and Microsoft STEM Advocate

“I began my journey at North Metro TAFE in 2020, taking a Cisco short course at night as I had an interest in IT and wanted to improve my basic networking skills. I enjoyed both the course and the experience so much I decided I wanted to make a new career out of it, switching to full-time study to complete a Certificate IV then Diploma in IT Networking.
The lecturing staff are extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and are always willing to share their insights and industry expertise. The Diploma course also gave me the opportunity to gain real-world practical experience working with a major MSP while I completed my studies through one of several internship programs on offer.
As well as preparing me to sit the exams for several highly regarded industry certifications, the fantastic learning environment gave me the chance to get hands-on training with many of the technologies I’ll now be working with as an IT professional,.
I’ve really enjoyed my time at North Metro TAFE and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to expand their qualifications or even switch to a new career path, as I have.”
