A graduate from a Diploma of Nursing program approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) is able to apply for registration with the NMBA as an enrolled nurse.

Curtin University(opens in a new tab) , Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University and Notre Dame University all offer pathways for entry and/or credit towards a Bachelor of Nursing. 
Murdoch University's Enrolled Nursing Accelerated Pathway(opens in a new tab)  makes it possible for Diploma of Nursing graduates to complete the Bachelor of Nursing in a shorter time while also working in healthcare.

Please note articulation agreements between NMT and individual universities may be subject to change and you should check with your preferred university for details.

As part of this course you are required to complete a clinical work placement arranged/negotiated by the North Metropolitan TAFE. It is an industry requirement for you to achieve and successfully complete a minimum of 400 hours work placement. You will be provided with forms and a clinical placement book to record your placement.

Please be aware that COVID-19 vaccination is an employment requirement for many healthcare providers.
NMTAFE students undertaking work placements or who are required to attend a healthcare or community setting as part of their studies are advised to conduct their own research about the healthcare provider regarding their policy settings around vaccination and proof of vaccination requirements.

Please note you will be required to:

• Complete a satisfactory Working with Children check/National Police Certificate (NPC) and Department of Health criminal check prior to placement.
• Complete a fitness to practice medical form and any immunisations/vaccinations required.
• Travel to an appropriate Health facility to complete clinical placement.
• Attend clinical placement across a seven (7) day week, which may include weekends and public holidays.
• Carry out shift work including a combination of morning, afternoon and night shifts.

Study outside of class hours, including private study, assignment preparation, and research will be required to successfully complete your course.

Bring your own device (BYOD) is encouraged but not essential. If you don’t have access to a computer and WiFi at home, we recommend using our library computers during library hours.

Please note as a student you will also have additional costs associated with your study when enrolling in the Diploma of Nursing:

• you will have text books to purchase and details of these will be provided at orientation.
• you may be required to complete a health check (approx. $200)*
• you may require immunisations and/or provide evidence of vaccinations for work placements and/or employment - COVID-19, Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella and Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (DTP) record of vaccination (cost will vary depending on your doctor and what vaccinations are needed)*
• Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) Screening Test (if required) ($37)*

To protect the public from harm, registered health practitioners and education providers must report concerns about registered students. This is a legal requirement. Practitioners and and education providers only need to notify Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) when they have a 'reasonable belief' that a student has an impairment that, when undertaking clinical training, may place the public at substantial risk of harm.

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) Enrolled Nurse Accreditation Standards 2017 also require Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) delivering HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing to notify AHPRA of any student undertaking clinical training who has been identified as having an impairment that may place the public at substantial risk of harm.
AHPRA will be advised of the names of all students undertaking the Diploma of Nursing.

Upon completion of the course and a minimum of 400 hours of work placement, graduates will need to seek registration with AHPRA to work as an enrolled nurse, or to enrol in further study to become a registered nurse. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) has developed core registration standards that define the requirements for applicants, registrants or students.
NMBA states that with the exception of registered students and non-practising registrants, these standards apply to applicants for registration and currently registered nurses and midwives.
