Create, cast, and finish your own set of functional ceramic bowls from start to finish

This 10-week introductory course in mould making and slip casting will guide you through the design, creation, and decoration of a set of beautiful, matching functional bowls. Designed for beginners, it’s ideal if you have little or no experience with clay or slip casting, and provides a strong foundation for further study in this area.

Throughout the course, you will develop an understanding of undercuts and the fundamentals of plaster mould making. You’ll learn how to prepare and manage casting slip, and gain confidence in pouring, timing, releasing, and trimming techniques. You will also explore a wide range of surface decoration methods, building both technical skills and creative confidence.

In your first two weeks, you will create a bowl prototype in clay, either hand-built or wheel-thrown. You’ll then make a plaster mould from your prototype, ensuring your design is completely unique.

Once your mould has dried, you will begin slip casting your bowls. Over the following weeks, you’ll apply a variety of decorative techniques, developing your ideas through research into historical and contemporary artists. Your finished bowls will be bisque fired and clear glazed, making them functional and food safe.
