Scholarships eligibility criteria, terms and conditions

Applicants must meet the criteria specific to the Scholarship category for which they are applying as well as the below criteria:

• Be an Australian Citizen or hold Australian Permanent Residency, or in the case of the Women in Non-Traditional Trades Scholarship, hold relevant visas, secondary visa or citizenship as shown in the criteria specific to the scholarship category below
• Apply and eligible to enrol to study at North Metropolitan TAFE in the advertised period as shown on the NMTAFE Scholarships webpage
• Apply and be enrolled in a course as shown on the NMTAFE Scholarships webpage.

Scholarship funding, course attendance and Student Code of Conduct breaches

Successful scholarship applicants will receive the following Scholarship Funding:

$2,500     

• Equity Scholarship  
• Ex-Defence Personnel Scholarship 
• Gender Access Scholarship 
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship 
• STEM Scholarship

$5,000 

• Women in Non-Traditional Trades Scholarship

$500       

• Kickstart Scholarship

Scholarship funding 

Scholarship funding will be provided to the successful scholarship applicants within 20 days of scholarship being awarded and accepted. The applicant will be liable to pay all fees as indicated on the course enrolment form. 

For recipients who are studying as part of an Apprenticeship or Traineeship, the scholarship funding will be provided within 20 days of the final day of study, during the initial study block, of the first semester of at NMTAFE.

Applicants must meet course entrance requirements

Scholarships are subject to applicants meeting the entry requirements to the course and being offered a place in the course by NMTAFE and subsequently enrolling into the course.  Applicants who do not meet the criteria to apply/enrol in the relevant NMTAFE course will not be eligible for a scholarship.

Limited number of scholarships

Scholarships are limited in number, and subject to availability.  Even if an applicant meets the scholarship criteria, a scholarship may not be awarded.

Costs above what is provided by the scholarship

Scholarships provide funding to contribute to the scholarship recipients cost of study or remove barriers to enable the recipient to study at North Metro TAFE.  Scholarship recipients are liable to pay all costs that may be required to complete the course of study including costs above what is provided by the scholarship.  There is no prescribed terms on what the funding can be used for however, some examples are: purchase of uniforms or Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), training equipment or laptop, assist with financial commitments of child minding or assist with fees and transport.

Non-payment of fees and course changes

Scholarships are not transferable and the recipient must pay the fees outlined in the course enrolment form.  Non-payment of fees and/or changing your course or course start date may forfeit any scholarship awarded.

Scholarship decision final

The Scholarship panel’s decision cannot by appealed and no correspondence concerning the decisions made will be entered into.

Scholarship provided to a student under the age of 18.

All scholarship applications made by an applicant under the age of 18 must be accompanied by the contact details of their guardian.

Each NMTAFE Scholarship has specific eligilibility criteria, terms and conditions as listed below.

The applicant may need to provide relevant documentation to NMTAFE before Scholarship funding can be released to confirm their eligibility to be awarded the relevant Scholarship.

Equity Scholarship

The Equity Scholarship is provided to recipients who clearly demonstrate that the scholarship will reduce barriers and improve accessibility to their chosen NMTAFE course of study.  Personal hardship will also be taken into consideration when assessing applications. Examples include:   

• Personal medical conditions 
• Disabilities or learning needs 
• Dependents with special needs.

Ex-Defence Personnel Scholarship

The Ex-Defence Force Personnel Scholarship is provided to applicants who are:

• Ex-serving Australian Defence Force (ADF) members or;
• An ADF member in active or inactive reserve forces or;
• A current ADF serving member about to transition/separate within 3-6 months.

Gender Access Scholarship

The Gender Access Scholarship is provided to recipients to reduce gender imbalance and promote diversity in student cohort. Examples include the promotion of women in trades and STEM and/or men in health and education. The scholarship will be utilised to reduce barriers and improve accessibility to their chosen course of study which is in a non-traditional area for them.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship is provided to applicants who identify as an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and be recognised as such by their community.

Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Scholarship

The STEM Scholarship is provided to applicants who clearly demonstrate that the scholarship will be utilised to reduce barriers and improve accessibility to study and/or work within the Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics.

Kickstart Scholarship

The Kickstart Scholarship is provided to recipients who clearly demonstrate that the scholarship will reduce barriers and improve accessibility to their chosen NMTAFE course of study. The kick-start scholarships will be higher in number, but for a smaller monetary amount than the other scholarships to be able to assist as many students as possible to commence their chosen course of study.

Women in Non-Traditional Trades Scholarship 

To be eligible to apply for the Women in Non-Traditional Trades scholarships applicants must: 

• Be a person who identifies as a women who has left school by January 1, 2024; 
• Be a Western Australian resident and: 
  • an Australian citizen; or 
  • permanent visa holder or holder of sub-class 309, 444, 790 or 820 visa or; 
  • secondary holders of a temporary visa of sub-class 457 or 482 visa; 
  • holders of a Bridging Visa E (subclasses 050 and 051) where the visa holder has made a valid application for a visa of subclass 785 or 790; 
  • Ukraine citizens who are holders of a visa sub-class 449 or 786; 
  • Afghan citizens who are holders of a visa sub-class 449; and 
  • holders of a bridging visa who are eligible to work and who have made a valid application for a subclass 866. 
• Commencing training in an eligible qualification as noted on the NMTAFE Women in Non-Traditional Trades and Technical Occupations Scholarship Website (full time or part time) between 1 January and 31 December 2024; 
• Undertaking their course at a Western Australian TAFE College; and
• Not be receiving another scholarship for their course of study.
