Develop a career in the rewarding world of disability work

When you complete the Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) you will be on a pathway to develop a career in the rewarding world of disability work. On successful completion, you could find work in a variety of settings such as residential, individual support, employment, recreational/day support, advocacy and case management.

*This course includes a minimum of 120 hours of supervised work placement, where you'll be able to apply your training in a meaningful and relevant way, and gain real industry experience.

  • Empower or re-enable older people
  • Work with people from different cultures
  • Provide personal hygiene to all people in your care
  • Manage manual handling tasks
  • Practice infection control procedures
  • Work and build relationships within a small team
  • Implement effective communication strategies
  • Learn the effects of dementia and the management of any related changes

Prior to enrolment into this qualification, please consider:

  • National Police Certificate and NDIS check. Please note that if your National Police Certificate shows any disclosable outcomes or pending charges, organisations are unlikely to accept you for work placement. Likewise, if your NDIS check results in an exclusion, interim bar or suspension, you will not be accepted for placement with NMTAFE’s Disability Sector organisations.
  • We highly recommend that students are 18 years or older before enrolling in this course. If you are under 18, organisations are unlikely to accept you for work placement.
  • Work placement is a mandatory part of this course. If you are not accepted for a placement, you will be unable to complete the course.
  • Whether you might find it difficult or distressing to provide personal care such as toileting and bathing for clients of any gender and varying ages. The provision of personal care, including toileting and bathing, to real people of any gender and varying ages, must be completed on work placement to complete the course.
  • Whether you have any difficulty in communicating with either workers or clients (i.e. difficulty with written or spoken English). Strong verbal and writing skills are essential for success in the course.
  • Manual tasks, including lifting, hoisting and hours spent on your feet, are involved in personal care work.
  • Ability to set aside between four and five days/week for attendance at classes, work placement and study.
  • Ability to attend your work placement regularly and reliably
  • If you have the following attributes:
    • Enjoy providing quality support for people who are frail aged or living with disabilities
    • May be physically demanding role at times
    • Empathetic with a strong sense of compassion and respect for individuals
    • Patient, discrete and committed to the rights of elderly people
    • Calm disposition and loving attitude
    • Reliable, motivated and flexible
    • Good time management skills
    • If you are able to think on your feet and be willing to take action quickly when instructed
