Set your sights on a career in surveying

This qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to work with spatial data and read, interpret and apply maps. You will learn about safety, performing computations and the skills necessary to operate in the field.

Gain basic surveying skills to begin an entry level job in the surveying and spatial information services sector, or continue with further study in surveying at North Metropolitan TAFE.

OLNA or NAPLAN 9 Band 8 C Grades in Year 10 English and Maths or equivalent Certificate I or Certificate II
This course is competitive so it is likely the number of applicants will exceed available places. When applying for this course you will need to show you have the minimum level reading, writing, and math skills, or certain qualifications, and meet selection criteria.

Completion of Certificate II in Surveying and Spatial Information Services does not provide automatic entry into Certificate III in Surveying and Spatial Information Services due to the specific entry requirements of Certificate III, which include a pass in Year 11 maths (or equivalent).

You'll be able to access your personal timetable (find out how on our Timetables page), once you have paid your fees. In the meantime the information below provides an indication of the time commitment required to complete this course, depending on available study options.

On campus

This course requires your attendance in class for 3 days per week when studied full time.   

At-home study

As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete additional study of around 15 hours each week outside of scheduled classes, including private study, assignment preparation, and research.

Work placement is optional.

Study outside of class hours, including private study, assignment preparation, and research will be required to successfully complete your course.

Bring your own device (BYOD) is encouraged but not essential. If you don’t have access to a computer and WiFi at home, we recommend using our library computers during library hours.

As a student you will also have additional costs associated with your study, for example text books and stationery, printing and other materials required for your assignments.

Additional costs include:

  • Survey bond of $200 to be paid at start of course. This bond can carry through to the Advanced Diploma of Surveying and will be refunded on course completion, provided there have been no equipment breakages.​ ​
  • A scientific calculator. Indicative cost (student price) for a bundled package (calculator & software) is approximately $249.00. This is a course requirement and further information regarding brand and software is provided on enrolment.
