Kick start your education, training and work skills

The Certificate I in General Education for Adults is a bridging course to future employment or study. Completing this course will improve your English, introduce you to the fundamentals of basic numeracy, and build your computer and technology skills.  It will also help you build the confidence and skills you need to enter the workforce or pursue further study.

When successfully completed this course will meet the entry requirements for most Certificate I, II and III TAFE courses.

Please note this is course is not equivalent to completing years 10, 11 or 12.

Important information

This course is competitive so it is likely the number of applicants will exceed available places

This course is open to all ages, however in:

  • Semester 1 - you need to have turned 15 years old by January 31.
  • Semester 2 - you need to have turned 15 years old by June 30.

All General Education students are required to participate in an interview and assessment as part of the application process. This will help determine if the course you have chosen is a good fit for you and at an appropriate level. Please note we have limited places for our courses and attending the interview does not guarantee you a place.

All applicants for Midland - Swan City Youth Service must be 15-24 years old. 

You'll be able to access your personal timetable (find out how on our Timetables page), once you have paid your fees. In the meantime the information below provides an indication of the time commitment required to complete this course, depending on available study options.

On campus

The course delivery is face to face two (2) days a week between 9:00am and 4:00pm.

Please ensure you have this time available each week to attend your scheduled face to face sessions and adequate time to undertake your own self-paced studies as required.

Each week you can expect:

  • Scheduled teaching sessions
  • Drop-in study sessions

In order to succeed in this course, you will require the development of attributes of an adult learner, which include;

  • Time management
  • Prioritisation of tasks
  • Effective communication
  • Meet deadlines
  • Work independently

As part of this course, you will undertake a pathways unit, in this unit you will investigate and plan a pathway to further studies which may include.

  • Certificate II in General Education
  • Certificate II in a vocational qualification
  • Pre-Apprenticeship, Apprenticeship and trainee pathways

Study outside of class hours, including private study, assignment preparation, and research will be required to successfully complete your course.

Bring your own device (BYOD) is encouraged but not essential.
If you don’t have access to a computer and WiFi at home, we recommend using our library computers during library hours.

As a student you will also have additional costs associated with your study, for example text books and stationery, printing and other materials required for your assignments.
